Tatami Mat Use & Care Guide

Tatami mats are not only beautiful and comfortable but also easy to use and care for. Follow these simple tips to maximize the benefits of your tatami mat and ensure its longevity.

Using Your Tatami Mat

Place your tatami mats on flat surfaces, such as a bed frame or wooden flooring, ensuring no gaps or bumps. Uneven surfaces can cause the mats to bend or break.

When you first receive your tatami mat, remove the zip tape and unfold it.

There's a strip of zip tape on the back of each mat, which can be used to attach multiple mats together, creating a continuous surface.

  • 1. Remove the Zip Tape

Start by taking off the zip tape from the back of the tatami mat.

  • 2. Fold the Long Side

Fold the long side of the mat into thirds with the tatami surface on the inside. This helps prevent wear and tear.

  • 3. Fold the Short Sides

Next, fold the short sides inwards so that the tatami surface is protected on the inside. Secure this fold with the zip tape.

  • 4. Repeat for Added Protection

Fold the long side into thirds again, ensuring the tatami surface is still on the inside to avoid damage.

  • 5. Secure with Zip Tape

Finally, secure the mat with the zip tape. If your mat doesn't have zip tape, use another suitable fastening method.

Maintenance Guide

  • Regular Vacuuming

Vacuum the tatami mats regularly to keep the surface clean. This will help remove dust, dirt, and allergens, maintaining a fresh environment.

  • Airing

Air out your tatami mat once a week in a well-ventilated area. If possible, expose it to direct sunlight for a few hours to prevent dust mites. Be cautious not to leave it in direct sunlight for too long, as it may cause discoloration.

  • Spot Cleaning

For spills or stains, use a damp cloth to gently blot the area. Avoid using too much water, and make sure the mats are completely dry before using them again.

  • Preventing Moisture Buildup

To prevent damage from moisture accumulation, avoid placing your tatami mat in humid areas. If the mat gets wet, thoroughly dry it before using it again to prevent mold and mildew.

By following these simple use and care tips, you can enjoy the comfort and beauty of your tatami mat for years to come.
