What material is used for the futon mattresses?

Our futon mattresses are made with premium-quality materials, designed for comfort and support, and are suitable for all body types. The outer layer, including the surface that touches your skin, is soft and absorbent 100% Indonesian cotton broadcloth dyed in Kyoto. The batting uses polyester cotton from Teijin Limited, with a 40 mm thick polyurethane core from Fukuoka to prevent sagging.

How soft are your futons?

Our futon mattresses feature diamond-shaped quilting with an 8-inch diagonal width, offering a uniquely fluffy and comfortable sleeping experience. This special quilting, which is rare even in Japan, ensures a cozy plumpness. The outer layer, which touches your skin, is made from soft, absorbent 100% Indonesian cotton broadcloth, dyed in Kyoto for an authentic touch.

Are your futons safe?

Yes. Our futons are safe and free from harmful chemicals such as antibacterial and antifungal agents. They are manufactured in accordance with US safety and quality standards. We recommend regular care to protect your futon from moisture, mold, and bacteria.

What size futon should I get for my children?

A Twin or Twin XL is usually a good fit for small children. A Full or Full XL is ideal for one adult or a larger child. We recommend Queen or King sizes for couples or families with children sleeping in between.

Where should I lay my futon?

  1. Directly on the Floor: For a firm sleep surface, lay the futon directly on a clean and dry floor. Some people love the solid support on flooring or tiles, while others might find it too hard. Everyone's comfort levels are different. Avoid flooring with large gaps.
  2. On a Bed Mattress: Place the futon on your regular bed mattress. This combination provides body pressure dispersion for better sleep without changing your bedroom's look.

How can I maintain my futon mattress to make it last longer?

Is my futon mattress washable?

No. Our futons are not washable due to their 40 mm-thick polyurethane core, which cannot be properly rinsed or dried. If your futon gets dirty, wipe the surface with a towel dampened with diluted neutral detergent, followed by a clean, damp towel, and then dry it. If your futon gets wet, hang it in the sun to dry.

My child had an accident on their futon. What should I do?

Remove the sheet and pat the surface with a towel wrung out with hot water to transfer the dirt to the towel. Use several towels, changing them as needed. Once the smell is gone, dry the futon in the sun thoroughly.

What should I do if my futon gets wet in the rain?

If your futon gets wet in the rain, don't worry! Follow these simple steps to help prevent any mold or mildew from forming and keep your futon fresh and comfortable:

  2. Dry with Hot Air: Use a hair dryer on a low heat setting to help dry out the damp areas.
  3. Sun Dry: As soon as the weather clears, hang your futon in the sun to ensure it dries completely and stays fresh.

What should I do if mold grows on my futon?

If you discover mold on your futon, follow these steps to address the issue:

  1. Disinfect: Wipe the surface with a cloth soaked in ethanol to disinfect it. Make sure to wear rubber gloves and ensure good ventilation during this process.
  2. Thorough Drying: Dry the futon thoroughly after cleaning. If it's raining outside, use a hairdryer on a low heat setting to help dry it. Then, place it on a chair near an open window to continue drying. Once the sun comes out, hang it outside to ensure it dries completely.

Note: Even if the mold is killed, its color may remain, and it's challenging to determine how deeply the mold has penetrated. If you're concerned about mold, we recommend purchasing a new futon to ensure your health and comfort.

What materials are used in your tatami mats? Are they environmentally friendly?

To ensure our tatami mats are as eco-friendly as possible, we maximize the use of natural materials.

  • We craft the surfaces using woven igusa (Japanese rush grass) from Kyushu, a prefecture renowned for producing the highest-quality igusa.
  • For the warp, we use cotton or hemp threads.
  • The color is achieved by dying with a special mud.
  • We limit artificial materials to those used to protect the mat and add durability — non-woven fabric for the backside and polyester for the rims.

Do tatami mats change color over time?

Yes, they do. Even if you buy them at the same time, slight color differences can occur due to the natural fibers. This happens because different parts of the grass, like the edges or the middle, can have varying hues.

We strongly advise against it. Tatami mats, made from natural materials, require proper ventilation. Placing carpets, rugs, or tarps on them can create a moisture trap, potentially leading to mold or mildew.

To ensure the longevity and freshness of your tatami mats, it's best to keep them uncovered, allowing them to breathe naturally.

Do your tatami mats have a non-slip backing?

No, our tatami mats do not have a non-slip backing. Avoid running on them to prevent slipping.

Can tatami mats grow mold?

Tatami mats made from Japanese igusa can develop mold under unsanitary conditions, similar to other natural materials. This is especially true for new tatami, which has a bluish color due to the nutrient-rich rush grass. Tatami absorbs moisture easily, so it's essential to manage the humidity in your room.

Are tatami mats reversible?

No, they are not. The back side is made of non-woven fabric and should not be used as the surface. If left on the floor for too long in this state, moisture can build up underneath, leading to mold damage.

How should I store tatami mats when not in use?

How often should I replace my tatami mat?

2. Zippered Futon Cover Sheets:

Since no antibacterial or antifungal agents are used, we recommend frequent washing, drying (airing), and sterilizing by sunlight to maintain freshness.

Why does my Zippered Futon Cover Sheet seem bigger than my futon mattress?

Our Zippered Futon Cover Sheets are designed with extra room to account for natural shrinkage after washing. This means they might feel slightly oversized when you first use them.

To avoid excessive shrinkage, dry your sheets naturally and avoid using a dryer. Always zip the cover completely and place it in a laundry net before washing to protect the zipper and fabric.

How do I unjam the zipper on my Zippered Futon Cover Sheet?

If your zipper gets jammed, gently pull the fabric to the left and right, and slowly move the slider (the knob part) in the opposite direction of the jam.

How many Futon Cover Sheets should I have?

We recommend having at least two sets of Futon Cover Sheets per person. This allows you to replace them with fresh sheets while washing the others.

How often should I wash my Futon Cover Sheets?
